Research Activity Title

New Art Music in Western Australia: 1970-2000 Pilot Project

Research Activity Description

The purpose of the research pilot project was to collect and digitise a living archive of Western Australian new art music and associated artefacts from 1970 to the present day. Tura, based in Perth has, since its inception in 1987, collected and collated a huge amount of archival material concerning new music and the music industry in Western Australia. The pilot project was funded by Edith Cowan University (ECU) with industry partner Tura and the funding enabled the Tura archival collection to be digitised. The collection will continue to grow and comprises materials in multiple formats, from sound and video recordings to music scores, program notes, posters and publicity associated with Western Australian new music activities and events. For the purposes of this research the collection parameters are the genre of “Western Art Music” as defined by the Australian Music Centre. This pilot project provided an introduction to extant materials, and investigated international standards of digitisation for archival purposes, copyright issues relating to the archive, possible hosts for such a collection and possibilities for a user interface.
