Author Biography

Professor Gerry FitzGerald

MB BS, BHA, MD, FACEM, FRACMA, FCHSE

Professor FitzGerald graduated from the Medical School of the University of Queensland in 1976. After three years in junior hospital posts, he took up the position of Director of the Emergency Department at the Ipswich Hospital in Queensland; a position he held for ten years. In 1990, he was appointed Medical Director of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and in 1993; he was appointed Commissioner of the QAS. In 2003, he was appointed Chief Health Officer for Queensland; a position he held until taking up his current post as Professor of Health at the Queensland University of Technology.

Professor FitzGerald's has made an extensive contribution to Australia's Emergency Medical systems. He was one of the co-founders of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and served as national Secretary of the College for 4 years. He was Editor in Chief of the Journal Emergency Medicine for four years. He established the Queensland Emergency Medical System (QEMS) structure and the QEMS Advisory Committee. As Chief Health Officer he was a member of Australia's Health Disaster Management and Policy Committee and Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council.

Since taking up his position at QUT, Professor FitzGerald has been leading the development of emergency and disaster management education and research programs. These programs include short course programs delivered for international organisations such as the Beijing City CDC and Indonesian CDC.
