The Poet's Work: A Study of Western Australian Contemporary Visual Arts Practices

This PhD research project concerns developing a better understanding of the working lives of Western Australian Visual Artists. Visual Art practice is a poorly understood vocation for many reasons, including the great diversity of practices now encompassed by the term ‘Art’ and the significant difficulties involved in defining serious artists (‘professionals’) from hobbyists.

The brief was to produce a graphical multi-dimensional way of representing the research data focussing on the practices, social actors, entities and institutions of Western Australian artists.

Beliefs and Perceptions about Burnout Amongst WA Mental Health Professionals

Safeguarding the wellbeing of our mental health workforce has become increasingly important. Demands on health services have increased and resources continue to be stretched. The empirical research to date has developed an understanding of the causes of burnout from an individual and organisational perspective. However little is known about how professionals think about burnout and the influence of their perceptions and beliefs on preventive behaviours.

Findings suggest that perceptions about management’s ability to help, stigma, self-blame and the silence surrounding burnout all impact upon the professionals' propensity to actively avoid or seek help for burnout. The health and safety culture of organisations, mental health stigma, and risk perceptions are discussed in the visual representation of my findings which will be used in both the thesis and journal article for publication.

Lichens as heavy-metal air pollution biomonitors in Collie, WA

This study aims to develop a cost-effective air pollution monitoring tool using lichens, with the scope of identifying effects of heavy-metal pollution associated with coal-power generation in jarrah forests in Collie, South-west Western Australia. Lichens are a symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi and are very effective biomonitors.

This visual conceptual model outlines the concepts used and steps taken to achieve the overall thesis aim, i.e. to prove the effectiveness of using lichens as biomonitors to explore heavy-metal air pollution patterns in the Collie air-shed. This visualisation will be used in the researchers thesis.

This research study seeks to discover parental, English teacher, peer group and friend influences on adolescents’ recreational book reading (RBR), in order to understand how adolescents’ engagement in RBR is affected by social factors. These understandings are ultimately sought with a view to enhancing participation in RBR.

Surfing is a creative “dance” that underpins a “culture of pleasure” (Booth, 2003). The “visualising research opportunity” presented an occasion to promote Edith Cowan University’s research profile and Rob Holt’s ethnographic work involving the Cape Naturaliste surfing subculture. The comic style art that visual art student Kate Hoolahan produced wonderfully reflects the research in edgy style. Kate has captured the essence of the Cape Crusaders. Her engaging illustrations serve as an artistic medium to stimulate interest in this PhD project and in the Surf Science program at ECU South West.

Dementia is a growing problem in terms of costs to sufferers, carer’s and the health system. Incidence rates are expected to increase due to the ageing population and the absence of an effective cure or treatment. The ‘Diets to Defy Dementia’ program (DTDD) was developed in 2010 between COTAWA, NAWA, and ECU with the purpose of increasing dementia awareness.

The research is to assess the current park users and analyse their attitudes towards current park facilities based on the results of face-to-face interviews, and photo elicitations with park users. The map design is based on a series of numbered 'camera' icons to navigate viewers from the initial map to supporting maps/photos. The research was to investigate park users perceptions towards the current and potential facilities at West Cape Howe National Park. (PhD, School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure)
