Abstract

There are a number of pedagogical guidelines that have been produced for quality online courses and these vary in terms of the educational context, purpose and user group. At Edith Cowan, it became clear to online course developers that guidelines for academic staff and instructional designers were needed to reflect the educational context and the pedagogy that the university was promoting. A group of academics and support staff from across the university developed a set of guidelines for quality online courses. This paper reports on the use of these guidelines, which are clearly providing a practical tool that can be used for a range of applications beyond their original purpose. They have provided a useful framework for staff training both in online teaching and face-to- face teaching; they are used formatively in instructional design and staff development to ensure quality in online materials and they have been used in training to organise, categorise and evaluate examples of online materials.
