White, T., Defying Gravity Percussion Ensemble, Digney, F., Oetomo, R., & Logan, A.. (2019). Rhythms of life percussion festival. Australia: Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Abstract

In September 2019, Tim White was the artistic director of the 'Rhythms of Life' percussion festival. This event encompassed seven public performances, eight percussion masterclasses and 12 workshops, and was hosted by the WA Academy of Performing Arts. The goal of the research was to challenge conventional percussion ensemble performance by inventing novel percussion instruments as performance art, interrogating the principles of minimalism (via Steve Reich's 'Drumming'), and emphasizing the emerging role of the composer /percussionist in 'Power.Passion.Percussion'.

These performances included the world premieres of four new works: Joey Eng's 'Six Minutes in the Rain', Gabrielle Lee's 'Turtles in a Hurry', Steven Hartley's 'Ripples' and Joey Eng's 'Quiet Mind'.

Power.Passion.Percussion

International percussion virtuosi Fiona Digney (multipercussion) and Robert Oetomo (marimba and vibraphone) dazzle with their extraordinary skills and musicianship in a celebration of the imagination, energy, passion and power of percussion. Defying Gravity joins in to explore a mystical world of exotic instruments, seductive timbres, breathtaking images, and the overwhelming power of rhythm!

Steve Reich's Drumming

Steve Reich's masterpiece, Drumming, is an overwhelming and unforgettable experience. Unique, astonishing, pioneering, enchanting and mesmerising, Drumming sweeps audiences into another realm – a musical universe where time stands still, where rhythms shimmer with joy, and melodies unfold until they sparkle like stars in the sky.
