Abstract

Changes in the environment of work, both internal and external, create unique challenges for organisations. On one hand there is pressure for conformity, effectiveness and efficiency. On the other, these factors need to be balanced with flexibility and responsiveness to societal, customer, and individual needs whilst maintaining a sustainable approach. Diversity in the workplace is increasingly being used to balance these competing approaches. Diversity can however present its own challenges, where ‘differences’ can seed conflict and power plays, resulting in negative behaviours and bullying. This paper will report the findings of a study of such interactions and implications for organisations.
