Abstract
Shortcomings in the way that the health care system addresses the needs of Australia’s Indigenous peoples have been recognised for many years. This recognition almost certainly pre-dated the 1970s, but the establishment of the first Aboriginal community-controlled health service in Redfern (Sydney) in July 1971 was a clear expression of the need for health services to be much more accessible to Indigenous people
