Abstract
As group-based work becomes an increasingly central component of both education and enterprise, the software used to support it must evolve if it is to provide an effective and efficient collaborative environment. With more and more group work being conducted primarily or entirely online, Web-based groupware systems are in particular need of attention. This paper discusses the design of GroupShare, a fully online groupware system built as a basis for ongoing research by the author. GroupShare was designed to be generically applicable, flexible, centralised, and provide a rich set of awareness mechanisms. The literature is examined in order to determine perceived limitations and feature usage of existing groupware, and recommendations are made for future systems.
