Abstract

Since the introduction of the role of the nurse practitioner and the development of national competencystandards for their practice there has been a need for well developed and relevant university courses toprepare these nurses for this role. Edith Cowan University (Western Australia) and Flinders University (SouthAustralia) have developed a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) program that is unique in Australia. Thereis demonstrated strategic and professional alignment within the two institutions to make the best use of academic expertise and clinical mentorship for students. This paper outlines the program and demonstrates what students will achieve in preparation for their role as a nurse practitioner.
