Abstract

The essence of dance is human movement through space. In th dance space, many factors can influence a dancer's movement, performance, and well-being. These factors include floors, barres, mirrors, and the general ambience and dimensions of the environment. Dance apparel often provides the connection between a dancer and the environment. Shoes and costumes can greatly influence the way a dancer moves and the forces a dancer experiences in connection with the environment. This chapter outlines these important environmental considerations for dance and provides suggestions for how you can adapt the dance environment, dance training, and performance to ensure safe and effective dance practice.
