Abstract

This book aims to take the reader on a sartorial journey through women's fashion in the Western world, explored in blocks of a few years each and spanning the years 1550 to 1970. Examples from works of art and collections from some of the best museums across the world teach the reader how to anticipate and “read” the details of dress. The ability to recognise the adaptation of fashionable details into lower-middle and sometimes even working class dress across the centuries will be a skill the reader can take from this book and apply to their own exploration of fashion history. The focus of the book is on the dress as garment: the body covering worn by women in various phases through history.
