An Image Processing Based Technique for Reading EAN-13 Barcodes

This paper addresses an image processing based technique for reading EAN-13 barcodes. This type of barcode is used worldwide for marking retail goods. The proposed technique uses a digital camera to acquire an image of the barcode, it then uses an image processing algorithm to locate and subsequently decode the barcode. Such an approach will enable electronic devices with cameras such as mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to act as a barcode reader.
