Abstract

The work adopts the first-person voice of a young man to explore performances of gender in fiction, probing the performative nature of voice in fiction to convey an authentic character. It emerged from research project Underscore Alchemy that applies a performance-based creative process to a writing workshop, offering a structure for writers to explore embodied strategies normally used by performers to develop character.
