McKenzie, V. & Maiden, S. (2019, 13 -20 July). Narrowcast. Bunbury, WA: Bunbury Regional Art Gallery.

Abstract

Narrowcast is an endurance performance in which the artists install a radio studio in gallery space and ‘narrowcast’ during opening hours.

This work explores the practice of improvised speech and shares the experience of placing it under the pressure of durational performance. Vahri McKenzie and Siobhan Maiden improvise the work using ‘scores’, a tool for performing artists that helps to structure the work produced.

"As artists who are performers, teachers and radio broadcasters, we build on a technique we already possess but which has never been tested in this way." Narrowcast encourages participation and engagement with visitors, who may like to seek out the source of the sound, sit in the studio lounge and listen to the work, enter the radio studio to suggest topics for the artists to address, or join the narrowcast themselves.
