Description
Exhibition Statement | OVERDRESSED is a body of work that explores our natural surroundings and how it shapes us. Specifically the work explores the question; How do we develop a sense of self and belonging if we don’t feel a connection to our environment and culture?
These concepts are realised through digital animations of clothing garments I owned as a child being engulfed and suffocated by the Australian landscape and climate. Over the course of the exhibition, this relationship changes from one of repression to one of co-existence, and eventually one of understanding and growth, reflecting my personal journey with the surroundings in which I live and work.
The exhibition also showcases this progression by representing the Australian landscape in new and abstracted ways. Representing the land in these ways has helped me to recontextualise and re-evaluate my surroundings and to develop a new perspective and appreciation of them, and I hope it gives viewers the opportunity to do the same.
Ultimately OVERDRESSED reflects my personal journey of navigating an environment and culture that wasn’t accepting of the way I expressed myself growing up, and the journey of finding my place amongst the beautiful landscape we call home.
