Abstract
Mathematics manipulatives have been used in the teaching of mathematics for fifty years or more in many countries. Often the use of manipulatives is justified on the basis that children are involved in 'hands on learning'. This paper reports on the results of the survey carried out in Western Australian primary and middle schools and establishes a baseline upon which further research will develop. Comparisons are made between previous research and the current findings. Genera! trends of manipulative use are reported.
