Abstract

Online collaboration via groupware has become an integral part of modern education and enterprise. Awareness mechanisms play an important role in the effectiveness of online collaboration, ensuring that group members are made aware of each other’s actions in a groupware environment. Ongoing research by the author aims to develop a model of "participation awareness", a form of awareness which provides an aggregated and at-a-glance display of group member participation throughout the length of a collaborative project. This paper outlines the key challenges in capturing, processing and presenting the data required for such a mechanism.
