Abstract
Technology education as a learning area in Australian schools is relatively new. In 1987, the Australian Education Council (AEC) began a series of initiatives that led to the publication in 1994 of nationally agreed curriculum statements and profiles related to eight learning areas, one of which is technology. In 1990 the K-12 Technology Curriculum Map (Australian Education Council) revealed a shift in emphasis in many schools toward gender equality, flexible outcomes and a variety of teaching and assessment strategies.
