Abstract
The ways in which the Accelerated Literacy (AL) program might work to accelerate the literacy levels of mainly Indigenous English as a secondary language (ESL) and English as a secondary dialect (ESD) students are discussed. The alternative second language acquisition (SLA) perspectives and theories may have the capacity to explain, and account for, the contribution of AL in improving the reading and writing outcomes for mainly Indigenous learners
