Abstract

Research clearly shows prevention programs that involve the whole-school community can significantly reduce bullying. The Friendly Schools & Families Program brings together the whole-school community by providing training and support for staff (both teaching and non-teaching), students, parents and community members. Everyone contributes to the development and maintenance of the friendly and safe culture of the school. The Friendly Schools & Families Program helps school communities enhance their skills, knowledge and capacity to implement an evidence-based whole-school approach to the reduction of bullying. The program provides 'many small steps' from which schools can systematically implement and tailor strategies for the whole school, classroom, individuals and families to reduce bullying. The program also addresses research showing that the development of resilience, positive self-esteem, empathy, cooperation, friendship skills, social skills and self management skills can help to protect people from the harmful effects of bullying.
