Abstract
Vocabulary knowledge has a profound effect on literacy achievement. Vocabulary development begins with speech before school and continues into formal literacy education at all levels of schooling. Through discussion of the relevant research on the role vocabulary plays in oral language, reading and writing, this paper seeks to highlight the importance of vocabulary development in these areas. Suggestions of general strategies are included to encourage teachers to translate research into classroom practice.
