Abstract

Adult literacy is a major issue in Australia that often goes unrecognised. There is an assumption that most Australian adults have the necessary functional literacy skills to address text based information that they encounter on a day-to-day basis. However, data from the 2006 Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicated that almost 47% of adult Australian do not have such skills [...].

The initiative was named READ! 3 because it encouraged adults to read three items in three months, record information about what they had read, and then submit their details into a prize draw.
