Abstract
In 2012 Hairytales was offered for the first time as a pilot program in two Western Australian communities; one metropolitan and one regional.
The program was designed to:
- Encourage children to discover reading for pleasure and the enjoyment of a wide variety of reading materials.
- Promote the importance of reading for pleasure in the development of functional literacy skills.
- Build confidence, improve literacy skills and nurture the beginnings of a lifelong reading habit for children.
- Support family literacy by engaging adults and children, regardless of reading ability, in enjoyable literacy activities.
- Increase the understanding for government, business and the broader community about the contribution libraries make to improving literacy standards.
- Work with schools and teachers to develop strategies to encourage children's love of reading.
