Abstract

In 2012 Hairytales was offered for the first time as a pilot program in two Western Australian communities; one metropolitan and one regional.

The program was designed to:

  • Encourage children to discover reading for pleasure and the enjoyment of a wide variety of reading materials.
  • Promote the importance of reading for pleasure in the development of functional literacy skills.
  • Build confidence, improve literacy skills and nurture the beginnings of a lifelong reading habit for children.
  • Support family literacy by engaging adults and children, regardless of reading ability, in enjoyable literacy activities.
  • Increase the understanding for government, business and the broader community about the contribution libraries make to improving literacy standards.
  • Work with schools and teachers to develop strategies to encourage children's love of reading.
