Short-packet covert communication with transmission time uncertainty

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the short-packet covert communication with transmission time uncertainty, and propose the random sub-slot selection (RSS) covert transmission scheme by exploiting the random transmission time to guarantee a higher level of communication covertness. In particular, we derive the covertness constraint and effective covert throughput (ECT) for the proposed RSS scheme, which shows that the sub-slot partition in a fixed time slot duration introduces a non-trivial tradeoff between the communication covertness and reliability from the aspects of transmission time uncertainty and packet error probability. Inspired by this, we further formulate and solve the optimization problem to maximize ECT by designing the transmit power and the number of sub-slots in each time slot. Finally, numerical results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of proposed RSS scheme relative to the existing covert communication scheme without transmission time uncertainty.
