Research Statement

Research Background

The author curated a project exploring the sounds and shapes of nature through interaction between “real” geological/biological structures and sounds (namely field recording, photographs and video from across Australia, Canada and Austria) to construct “imaginary” worlds of audio and visual art. The project comprised 8 composer commissions, 3 public concerts and 2 community workshops in Dwellingup, Ellenbrook and Fremantle, an exhibition at Ellenbrook Arts and an online presence through 17 composer interviews, 18 recordings and other documentation. The exhibition was a survey of recent work in this field and included of visual and sound artwork and scores by 16 international and Australian artists and composers shown for the first time at Ellenbrook Arts.

Research Contribution

Twelve new musical works by Australian and International composers exploring new approaches for “foregrounding our aural perception of the Earth” and the relationship between art and the environment, were created using traditional and graphic notation, spectral transcription, “audio” and “object” scores and hybrids of these approaches. Elements of flora and fauna, geographical and meteorological features and speculative pasts and futures of Western Australian were amongst the subject matter for the works. The ensemble GreyWing workshopped with a Canadian, an Austrian and the Australian composers in the creation of new sounds, orchestrations and first recording and performance of the works. A unique supporting exhibition of sonic and visual work expanded the scope of the project to include 45 Prints, 9 sculptural scores, 14 videos and 2 sound Installations by an additional 10 artists.

Research Significance

The project was supported by a Grant from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Ellenbrook Arts and Lost Eden Gallery. The project was selected for exhibition at Ellenbrook Arts. Concert recordings and interviews were published on Bandcamp.
