Abstract

Economic recovery is a key task facing countries after disasters such as public health crises. As in most industries, hotel managers and researchers have sought to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and promote the industry’s renaissance. This paper takes China’s Labour Day public holiday in 2020 during COVID-19 as a case in point. By interviewing a hotel industry leader, a hotel group CEO, we find that the pandemic has influenced hotel traffic and revenue in addition to bringing several unique challenges. As the government and hotels took steps to address the consequences of COVID-19, China’s tourism and hospitality market even started to recover during COVID-19. The industry’s long-term development will depend on hotel performance, the anti-pandemic environment, and changes in individuals’ mentality in a post-pandemic world. A conceptual framework is proposed that incorporates the status and prospects of hotels during COVID-19 in 2020. Ultimately, this study offers insight into the hotel industry’s revival post-COVID-19.
