Abstract

Technology disruption and the sharing economy have driven microentrepreneurship in all tourism sectors. Through a literature review, this chapter presents and analyses the phenomenon of the sharing economy in relation to tourism microentrepreneurship. It presents and highlights the factors contributing to the development of sharing economy-driven microentrepreneurship in tourism. It also presents a typology of sharing economy-based microentrepreneurship in tourism. The typology shows that there are too many sharing economy platforms for microentrepreneurs - transportation, dining, tour guide services, and accommodation are the most common sharing economy platforms in tourism. This chapter emphasizes how tourism businesses must keep up with the latest trends, developments, and shifts in travelling behaviour and technology. It demonstrates how the sharing economy is gaining ground and already having an impact on all facets of the travel and tourism industry, providing microentrepreneurs with significant opportunities as well as difficulties and threats. Given the limited research in this area, this chapter is a strong basis for discussion, critique, and/or support for potential future research.
