Abstract

This chapter of the book comprehensively analyses the potential risks of using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to perpetrate online harassment. It investigates the sophisticated capabilities of generative AI technologies, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and their potential to be misused in digital environments. The chapter provides an insightful examination of how these technologies can exacerbate the severity and impact of online harassment, affecting individuals and communities on digital platforms. Through an exploration of various real-world examples, the chapter analyses the methods employed in AI-driven harassment and the complex legal and ethical issues they pose. It emphasises the urgent need for effective detection and prevention strategies and highlights the significance of public awareness and education in combating such abuses. The chapter also explores the broader implications of AI misuse in the online sphere, emphasising the ethical responsibility of developers and users in ensuring responsible AI advancement. By offering a multidisciplinary approach to understanding and mitigating the negative impacts of generative AI in online harassment, this chapter contributes to the ongoing discourse on the ethical use of AI technologies.
