Abstract

The education of the next generation of frontline cyber-defence professionals, security operations centre (SOC) analysts, and incident handlers is challenging due to the limited availability of work placements for students within the industry, the unavailability of realistic datasets for training purposes, and the intricate process of crafting authentic case studies. This chapter explores the value of incident response drills conducted on cyber ranges as an indispensable component of cyber-defence education and their potential for solving these challenges. Furthermore, the psychological dimension of cyber-defence education is explored, as engaging in realistic incident response drills within a cyber range can contribute to decreased stress levels among participants. The controlled setting provides a safe place for learners to make mistakes, learn from them, and build confidence without fearing real-world consequences. As participants develop and gain expertise, stress levels diminish, creating a positive correlation between practical skill development and psychological well-being.
