Abstract

World-first laws to ban social media for children under 16 passed in Australia in late November, 2024, and so we celebrate the 18th birthday of the Journal of Children and Media (JOCAM) at an important juncture. Facebook opened its membership to anyone (ostensibly) over the age of 13 in 2006, at about the same time as JOCAM was founded, but the ramifications for children and families were not yet envisaged.
