Abstract

This chapter examines best practices in impact assessment (IA) for effectively engaging with the public during the overall follow-up stage. Original primary research was conducted, comprising a thorough literature review and a survey of international scholars and practitioners (drawn from membership of the International Association of Impact Assessment and published authors in the field) to identify ideas and examples from practice of effective engagement during IA follow-up. A suite of 12 best practice principles is established along with brief examples drawn from case study practice. They are explained in relation to the spectrum of public engagement and fall into three broad categories: (1) essential foundations for IA follow-up implementation and keeping the public informed of development outcomes; (2) basic and minimum requirements for public participation in IA follow-up through consulting and advising approaches; and (3) advanced approaches for effective engagement through co-producing and co-deciding in IA follow-up.
