Research Statement

Research Background

This creative non-fiction essay was commissioned by Bunbury Regional Art Gallery for a publication linked to the South West Art Now exhibition. The essay was commissioned to represent the creative writing practice in the South West and considers creative practice and its relationship to the landscape in the region, with three sections navigating creative practice as a nexus between the earth beneath our feet and the sky above us. The work involved visiting locations on the Collie River to write in relation to the granite rocks of the riverbed and observations of the night sky, including the rare Aurora Australis. The publication records the various artists and their practices to tell the story of the region.

Research Contribution

The essay was described by director of Bunbury Regional Art Gallery, Dr Michael Bianco as exploring “both the possibilities and the challenges of an artistic life in a part of the world equally defined by its geographic and cultural isolation and its potent landscape. Mazza's essay Rock, Creation and Night Sky positions these three elements as pillars of existence and as portals into new or reinvigorated ways of seeing.” It is one of two essays, including the curator’s essay on the works, included in this book.

Research Significance

Mess Books are an Australian publisher with an interest in contemporary art, photography, design and society. They edit and publish catalogues for galleries, exhibitions and events in Australia. A New Constellation includes work by 28 artists and seeks to identify “conversations between works across time and place, gesturing at the region's collective cultural production.” (Mess Books) The launch was part of a biennial exhibition opening held at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery 15th March 2024 with over 600 people in attendance.
