Abstract
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) consider tourism as a powerful tool to promote women’s empowerment and gender equality with the fifth SDG pertaining targets to address this issue. Despite this recognition, research on women’s empowerment in tourism and the alignment of this scholarly stream with the UNSDGs is scarce. To address the gap, the primary objective of this research is to comprehensively assess and analyse the current state of women empowerment within the field of tourism. The current systematic quantitative literature review draws on 30 journal articles on women’s empowerment in tourism and hospitality to map the existing knowledge on the topic and assess the alignment with the UNSDGs. This research demonstrates that prior literature on women’s empowerment in tourism is dominantly atheoretical with a preference for qualitative approaches. In addition, the findings indicate that previous literature on the topic supports the fifth goal through SDGs #5.5, #5.7, and #5.9. Future research should consider engagement with innovative theoretical and methodological approaches and address other affiliated targets of the fifth SDG.
