Abstract

Urban recreational and sports turfgrasses offer vital ecosystem services, such as regulating temperature, mitigating erosion, filtering pollutants, creating recreational activities, and providing habitat for wildlife in urban environments. However, the sustainability and functionality of these services are threatened by the frequency and intensity of droughts that are occurring because of climate change. This review addresses how drought affects the ecosystem services that urban sports and recreational turfgrasses provide. It also provides recommendations for planning, design, and management of drought-resilient urban turfgrasses in the face of climate change and drought conditions.
