Abstract

Developmental challenge refers to novel and demanding work activities that call on and stretch employees’ abilities and determination. Engagement in developmental challenge enhances the quality of employees’ work life and work-related outcomes. Research has, for example, shown that developmental challenge boosts employees’ motivation, well-being, and sense of psychological empowerment and is pivotal for their learning and career development. Less is known about antecedents of employee engagement in developmental challenges. This chapter addresses factors that affect employees’ choice to engage in developmental challenges, factors that affect the division of developmental challenges among team members, and factors that affect the extent to which supervisors assign developmental challenges to their subordinates. As such, this chapter provides insight into factors that stimulate access to and engagement in developmental challenges and identifies avenues for future research on this topic.
