Abstract
This vignette is a reflection on the author’s PhD journey and the strengths, limitations, and costs to queer people of people undertaking research that overlaps with their own lived experience. The author’s PhD deals with the impacts of systemic discrimination against queer people in the emergency sector in Australia. She draws on her experiences as a queer person working as a paramedic. She explores how the macho and heterosexist culture of the emergency sector made it difficult if not impossible for queer people, like her, to be their authentic selves at work and how, over time, this culture can wear down and discard its queer employees.
