Abstract

Environmental concerns, such as human alteration, pollution, and the effects of climate change, have had a significant impact on the survival of beaches worldwide. In Ghana, beaches face numerous threats stemming from human activities, such as deforestation, construction, sand mining, open defecation, and disposal of waste into the sea. Moreover, other factors such as strong winds, high waves, and the effects of climate change contribute to beach vulnerability. This paper is part of a broader study that investigated the environmental attitude and behavior of the Fisher Folks along coastal beaches in the Winneba Municipality in Ghana. Although the broader study was primarily designed and conducted as a mixed method using descriptive surveys, interviews, and participant observations, this paper reports on the qualitative aspect. Opportunistic sampling was adopted to select participants for the study and was shaped by anthropocentric theory. The results showed that the fisher folks have moderate awareness about their environment, hold abstemiously adverse attitudes and behaviors toward their environment, and lack of stringent retribution for offenders who degrade the environment. Recommendations for sustainability were also discussed.
