Abstract
The 2025 Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research (APSMER) was held from 9 – 11 July at Edith Cowan University in partnership with the School of Education and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). APSMER is the official regional conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), and in 2025, it was proudly supported by the Australian Society for Music Education (ASME). The symposium was last held in Australia in Launceston, Tasmania, in 1999. APSMER 2025 welcomed over 300 international delegates to Perth, Western Australia, for scholarly and cultural exchange. The theme, “Being and becoming musical in a posthuman era,” guided our curiosities as we considered the role of music and music education in the human experience now and into the future. Keynote presentations were delivered by Professor Clint Bracknell (University of Western Australia), Distinguished Professor Margaret Barrett (Monash University), Associate Professor Julie Ballantyne (University of Queensland), Associate Professor Alexis Kallio (Griffith University), and Ricky Kej (India). Performances were featured by Gina Williams, Guy Ghouse, WAAPA staff and students, and the Mirabilis Collective. Over 250 presentations were delivered, consisting of symposia, workshops, spoken papers, and research posters. Following her keynote address, Distinguished Professor Margaret Barrett was awarded ASME Honorary Life Membership for substantial service to the association and contribution to music education nationally and internationally.
