Abstract
This chapter explores challenges of conference participation for academics and professional staff in Perth, Western Australia – the world’s most geographically isolated capital city. Through the lived experiences of three Perth-based authors, we examine how geographical isolation and disability intersect to shape conference accessibility. We draw on insights from inclusive service design to identify new ways to ensure a sustainable career ecosystem for isolated people with disability. Using the Relational Employability Framework as a reflective tool, we critically consider how systemic and individual factors shape conference engagement, particularly with respect to our capacity for global knowledge exchange, professional development and career progression, thus impacting our career sustainability. In doing so, we demonstrate the need for conference organisers to consider the relationships between geography, time zones, physical spaces and diverse participant needs. We conclude with practical insights for designing inclusive conferences that equitably incorporate diverse ways of knowing, doing and being across time and space.
