Empowering communities through gastronomic tourism: A sustainable development model in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle
Abstract
This chapter examines the role of gastronomic tourism in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, focusing on its potential to empower local communities and promote sustainable development. The research highlights how gastronomy can transcend food consumption to become a key aspect of cultural identity, economic growth, and community engagement. It addresses challenges such as underutilized local food systems and barriers preventing communities from fully benefiting from tourism. Gastronomic tourism offers opportunities for immersive cultural experiences that align with the global shift towards responsible travel. Key research questions explore how gastronomic tourism can contribute to sustainable community empowerment, enhance tourism experiences through local food and culture, and promote responsible consumption, supporting global Sustainable Development Goals like Zero Hunger and Decent Work. Using qualitative methods, the study includes interviews with stakeholders such as food producers, tourism operators, and community leaders. The findings aim to demonstrate how gastronomy can drive sustainable economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability.
