Shut up & write! A dialogue on community, wellbeing, and purpose

Abstract

This chapter examines how Shut Up and Write! (SUAW) functions as a multidimensional wellbeing intervention within higher education settings. Through dialogic inquiry between SUAW practitioners, we explore how this approach transforms writing from an isolating experience into a communal practice with profound implications for scholarly wellbeing. Our analysis, framed by care ethics and “care-full” learning environments, reveals how SUAW creates nested communities fostering belonging across boundaries, provides purpose through shared intentionality, and models alternative academic cultures prioritising both productivity and wellbeing. SUAW represents a form of resistance to “care-less” academic cultures by demonstrating how care becomes not merely aspirational but a lived practice within academia.
