Abstract
This chapter explores the potential of interconnected regional tourism in South Asia, focusing on Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, and India. The study aims to examine international tourists’ perspectives on the feasibility and attractiveness of multi-country travel in the region, drawing comparisons with successful integrated tourism models in Europe. Using the Push–Pull Motivation Theory as a framework, the chapter employs a qualitative design based on 85 semi-structured interviews with international tourists visiting Sri Lanka between May and August 2024. The findings reveal key motivations, perceived benefits, and barriers influencing tourists’ willingness to participate in interconnected travel. Insights on visa facilitation, transportation connectivity, and collaborative marketing strategies are also presented. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers and tourism stakeholders on enhancing regional cooperation to drive sustainable growth and visitor flow across South Asia.
