Abstract

Purpose: This chapter introduces the purpose and key themes of this book. In addition, it outlines the main objectives in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the business sector. Methodology: This chapter reviews the literature on the SDGs and the business sector and provides an overview of the chapters. Findings: Drawing on the emerging insights from recent academic scholar- ship, reports by international development agencies and diverse perspectives presented in this book, it is argued that businesses play a critical role in addressing the United Nations (UN) SDGs. While contemporary compa- nies in both the developed and developing countries increasingly embrace the post-2015 development agenda by integrating relevant goals into their strategies, operations and cross-sectors collaborations, implementation remains a significant challenge due to both varied interrelated economic, social and political issues, as well as unanticipated global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Practical and social implications: Given the growing scepticism about ach- ieving the SDGs by 2030 and recognising the fundamental role the business sector must play, businesses and policymakers must make concerted efforts and collaborate to develop and implement effective strategies that can drive real progress towards achieving the SDGs. Originality/value: This chapter contributes to the scholarly debate on the role of businesses in advancing the SDGs as a means of addressing of pressing societal grand challenges. It argues that business engagement with the UN SDGs can unlock significant market opportunities and enable purpose-driven, responsible companies to restore societal trust and legitimacy.
