Abstract
Encouraging residents to participate in pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs) is an important topic for academic researchers and practitioners. Residents are considered to be key stakeholders for the development and protection of local tourist destinations (Porras-Bueno et al., 2023). Prior research has found that residents can be encouraged to engage in PEBs when they identify with the environment, possess a positive attitude towards PEBs, etc. (van Valkengoed et al., 2022). The extant literature has identified two types of PEBs that tourists engage in. These have been labelled as low-effort pro-environmental behaviours (LEBs) and high-effort environmental behaviours (HEBs) (Ramkissoon et al., 2013).
