Abstract

Hospitality has been practiced across the globe for as long as people have travelled and met others (O’Gorman, 2006, 2009, 2010). It has been taught as a subject in higher education since 1922 (Cornell); 1929 (Hotel School The Hague); The Scottish Hotel School (1944); and Hotel Management School Leeuwarden (1987). It has also been discussed in peer-reviewed academic journals for more than 40 years (Brotherton, 1999; Cassee & Reuland, 1983; Golubovskaya et al., 2017; Hemmington, 2007; Lugosi et al., 2009; Nailon, 1982; Riley, 1984). Much of these discussions have centred around the three concepts of domestic, commercial and civic/social hospitality and therefore also around the ‘nature of hospitality’ as well as the ‘management' of hospitality.
