Design and development of solar e-hub structures with fused deposition modeling and PLA: A CAD-driven approach

Abstract

In Malaysia, there is an increasing demand for energy for smaller-scale applications. The application of solar energy storage devices is significantly important for off grid communities which can achieve a great deal from the solar energy that is constantly available in the rural areas. It is also beneficial for campers and recreational vehicle users, providing a convenient energy source in remote locations where access to traditional power grids is limited. The advent of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies has revolutionized the design and production processes across various industries. In the realm of renewable energy, the application of AM opens new possibilities for optimizing the configuration of solar e-hubs, facilitating enhanced efficiency and performance. This fast-prototyping technique is controlled by computer aided design (CAD) software like CREO Parametric 10.0 and Ultimaker Cura 5.4. The method implemented in this research is the Fused Deposition Method (FDM) which includes sustainable green materials such as PLA (Polylactic Acid). This research involves the use of a heated bed with 50°C, printing temperature of 215°C, 50 mms-1 printing speed and a 220 V power supply. Outcomes show the rapid processing of the complex drawings, which signifies competitive printing speed.
