Evaluation of skid resistance and its relationship with texture depth: A case study
Abstract
Flexible pavements, widely used for highways and airport runways, are susceptible to skidding accidents influenced by factors such as surface texture, friction, and vehicle speed. Skid resistance, a key safety parameter, is essential for preventing roadway crashes. With increasing accidents linked to inadequate surface friction, understanding the factors affecting skid resistance on flexible pavements has become crucial. This study assesses the frictional characteristics of the Landmark University Road network to determine skid resistance under both wet and dry conditions. The British Pendulum Test and Sand Patch Test were employed to evaluate microtexture and macrotexture, respectively. Results indicate that all measured skid resistance values fall within the acceptable limits for their pavement category according to ASTM-E303 standards. Findings also show that higher macrotexture levels correspond to increased skid resistance. The study recommends continuous monitoring of skid resistance and pavement friction to enhance roadway safety and guide maintenance planning.
