Technology-enabled interventions to support functional independence in people living with dementia: A scoping review protocol

Abstract
Dementia progressively affects cognitive, functional, social, and physical abilities, reducing an individual’s capacity to live independently within their home or community. Technology-enabled interventions such as smart home systems, telecare, mobile applications, wearable devices, and socially assistive technologies have the potential to support daily functioning, safety, mobility, and social participation. This scoping review will map and synthesise evidence on technology-enabled interventions that support functional independence among people living with dementia. Functional independence is defined as performing activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living, maintaining safety and mobility, and participating in everyday social and community activities. Given the rapidly expanding but heterogeneous evidence base, the review will examine intervention types, reported outcomes, and study characteristics, while identifying trends, evidence gaps, and opportunities for future research, technology development and deployment. Findings will provide a clearer understanding of how technology can support independent living for people living with dementia.
