Abstract

This chapter proposes a typology of Australian food charity, describing seven types of food aid provision in Australia. The typology includes large warehousing foodbanks, community food charity, emergency and disaster responses, networks, social enterprises, community gardens and farms, and school food charity programmes. There are some overlapping components in the types of food assistance described here. For example, both community food charities and school food programmes may provide meals to school-aged children, and social enterprises and community gardens may provide fresh produce to community members; however, they have different ways of working, often different values, and occasionally, different missions. Each of the food assistance agencies described here plays a vital role in the food space in Australia, and each is involved in addressing hunger and food insecurity.
