Research Statement

Research Background

The music CD recording of WF Bach's and Muthel's two-fortepiano works constitutes a radical rethink asking how might the Empfindsamer and Sturm und Drang styles be performatively understood as markedly different from any other contemporaneous style? This research extends current interrogation of historic performance practice, specifically with regard to fortepiano, with an experimental reconstruction of WF Bach's and Muthel's interpretative intent and practices using historic keyboard instruments.

Research Contribution

This repertoire is infrequently interrogated in practice due to conceptual and technical difficulty. The few existing recordings of this repertoire draw on a narrow selection of historically documented performance conventions, evidencing a 'modernist' approach to performance style. In contrast, Lancaster and Huntingford have developed a research collaboration drawing on an extensive knowledge of primary sources, a broad experience with historic keyboard instruments, recent research, and experimental interpretative approaches. This research interrogates the experimental application of mid and late 18th-century playing styles, spontaneous embellishment uniquely rooted in the unique styles of the two composers, and declamatory rhetorical performance.

Research Significance

This recording is part of a long term research project interrogating Empfindsamer and Sturm und Drang repertoire and the historical music context. This recording is the first commercial release in Australia exploring "non-modernist" late-18th-century Empfindsamer and Sturm und Drang performance conventions. The highly-regarded and selective Tall Poppies label (distributed globally) reflects the standard of the research and Lancaster's profile as an international expert in the field.
